How To: Tofu
I never would have guessed that there would be so many tofu newbies out there! When I posted a picture of the tofu salad that I had for dinner a few nights ago, I received massive amounts of feedback from people who had been wanting to try tofu but weren’t quite sure how to prepare it. Well, my little bloggies—your wish is my command!
I have written out my step-by-step instructions for preparing tofu. I know a lot of people are huge fans of softly cooked tofu, or even raw tofu—but I prefer to make mine in a crunchier homestyle french fry fashion. They end up coming out looking like literal french fries, but they’re perfect as salad toppers, stir-fry toppers, or even as little snacking fries to bring with you when you’re on the go.
Step 1: Wrap tofu (preferably “extra firm” tofu) in paper tower to soak out liquid. I use several batches of paper towels to make sure the tofu is as dry as possible before I proceed to slice it.
Step 2: Slice the tofu. To achieve my “home fry” version of tofu, I recommended cutting the block into little rectangle pieces. Be careful not to slice them too thin or else they will burn when cooked
Step 3: On a cooking spray-coated pan, spread out tofu “fries”
Step 4: Bake tofu at 400 degrees Farenheit for 30-45 minutes (depending on how crisp you would like the “fries” to be.)
Step 5: Enjoy!

I never thought of cooking tofu since I don’t have a press, but you make it look like its simple!! Do you put anything on top of it to press out extra liquid or just let the paper towels do their thing?
Nope! I just use the paper towels and press down with my palms. I do use a lot of paper towels, but hey– it works for me!
Love those tofu fries… can’t wait to make them!!
I love tofu when I order it out but I’ve hated it every time I’ve made it at home! I’ll have to try it out your way- this looks good! Mine is always mushy and gross ick. Thanks!
Haha absolutely! If they’re mushy then maybe you aren’t soaking out enough of the water.
Let me know if this method works for you
There’s an 99% chance that I will not be trying this particular recipe haha! If I was going to have tofu, I’d probably rather have someone else make it for me. So if you want to come cook for me, then I would definitely try your tofu!
Haha! Fine– I’m on my way!
yum! i love tofu. i was veggie for 15 years and even though i don;t ‘need’ to eat it anymore.. i still do!
great recipe
Thank you! Yeah– I don’t think I’d give it up either
Thanks so much for this how to! I’ve had tofu sitting in my fridge for.. well.. I don’t even know how long, and have been too lazy to experiment with cooking it.
Awesome! Use that baby up
yum! I had no idea cooking tofu was so easy
I wish I would have seen this post a few years ago when I first tried tofu! …. I didn’t hate it but WOW, I was doing it allllll wrrrrooonngg! (I say it like that because it was truly wrong!) ….YUM! I need to give tofu a go again!
I love how easy this is. I’ve never tried baking tofu before!
Perfect how-to girl! I am usually a chicken when it comes to trying tofu recipes….not anymore!
Ohhh I have not tried tofu like this before. I am going to getttt on that!! Yummayyy.
Neat way to cook tofu, looks yummy!
I loooove Tofu!!!! I haven’t tried any tofu fries yet, but will have to put on my list of to-do’s soon, looks delish
You have got to! It’s an awesome source of protein
It sure is! I recently have been putting tofu in stir fry’s, but can’t wait to try these fries…thanks for sharing the recipe
I like my tofu nice and crispy like you. It’s definitely worth the wait
I agree 100%! The mushy tofu just doesn’t cut it haha
I don’t think I’ve liked tofu because I’ve always tried the soft and squishy recipes, and the texture freaked me out. I need to give it another chance with your recipe!
This recipe makes them very crisp! My dad saw them ad didn’t even think they were really tofu haha
I’m so glad you posted this! I accidentally tried tofu once when i was like 8 and i’ve been scared of it ever since… but this actually makes me want to attempt it again
Go for it
Let me know how it goes!
I do my tofu in pretty much the same way – I love it crispy!
I tend to stay away from tofu because of the “soy”; I am curious, do you know if there is a company that makes tofu out of non-gmo beans?
Thanks-
I’ve heard of a brand called Mori-Nu that claims to be non-GMO, but haven’t actually tried it myself. Let me know if you find one!
I know that Sunrise uses non-gmo beans.. i thot that only their organic line uses non-gmo but at a kitsilano event lately, they were cooking up tofu stir-fry samples (teriyaki – yummy!) and so I asked about the non-gmo bit and they told me that all their products use non-gmo. I asked why it’s not on all packaging but they say it’s space limitation.. however, their website states it..
That looks really good! Thx for sharing.. what brand did you use? Some tofu that I use tends to break easily.. the one you have look pretty good!
Hi! quick question (i hope you get this since i am commenting on an old post…) i am going to make tofu for the first time tonight (go me!) and i was wondering, can you store the leftovers? Or do you just make enough for the meal?
I will usually make the entire block, then store the leftovers in fry form for another day
